AI Demand Boosts Singapore’s Growth Forecast to 5%

Singapore’s economy is projected to experience a significant boost, with growth expected to reach 5% in 2026, a notable increase from the earlier forecast of 3.5%. This optimistic outlook is largely attributed to the persistent demand for artificial intelligence (AI), which is bolstering the technology sector. A recent survey conducted among 21 economists and analysts suggests that the most probable growth range will fall between 5% and 5.4%.

In the second quarter, Singapore’s economy witnessed a robust expansion of 5.9% year-on-year, surpassing the previous median forecast of 4.3%. This impressive performance underscores the critical role of AI-driven technological advancements in supporting the nation’s economic trajectory. Analysts identified a sustained upturn in AI as a fundamental factor for the positive outlook, while also noting potential benefits from a resolution or easing of tensions in the West Asia conflict and stronger-than-anticipated global economic growth.

Despite the promising forecast, there are concerns about potential challenges that could impact growth. A prolonged conflict in West Asia and the possibility of an AI investment bubble bursting were highlighted as significant downside risks. These factors could potentially hinder the favorable economic projections for Singapore in the coming years.

Looking ahead to 2027, economists anticipate a more moderate GDP growth rate of 3.1%. Inflation is expected to be manageable, with forecasts indicating a rate of 2.1% for 2026. Meanwhile, the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s core inflation is projected to be slightly lower at 1.9%. Unemployment is expected to remain stable, with the year-end rate forecasted to hold steady at 2.1%.
