Singapore’s Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), named Valour. This significant event took place just nine months following the unveiling of its predecessor, Victory. The launch occurred at Benoi Shipyard, where ST Engineering CEO Vincent Chong noted that insights gained from constructing the first vessel allowed for a quicker launch of Valour by three months. The remaining ships in the class are expected to see further gains in production efficiency as the fleet develops.
The new MRCVs are set to replace the aging Victory-class missile corvettes, bringing advanced capabilities to the Republic of Singapore Navy. These vessels have been designed to seamlessly integrate with various unmanned systems, making them versatile in handling multiple mission types. The fleet, which will include Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, is scheduled for progressive delivery starting in 2028. The construction of the third and fourth ships in the class is already underway.
At the launch ceremony, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam highlighted the critical role these vessels will play in safeguarding Singapore’s maritime interests. He pointed out the increasing global tensions and the strategic importance of crucial sea lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. Shanmugam emphasized that these vessels have an impressive operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles, with the ability to remain at sea for over 21 days, thus enhancing Singapore’s maritime security.
The project has required comprehensive systems integration, managing various elements such as power, cooling, and mission module requirements, as detailed by the Defence Science and Technology Agency. This capability to design, build, and maintain sophisticated naval warships domestically is the culmination of decades of investment in Singapore’s defense industry, as underscored by Shanmugam during his address.
Valour’s command has been entrusted to Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned 19-year veteran of the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance. Low expressed his ambition to cultivate a pioneering crew spirit that will contribute to shaping the future of the Republic of Singapore Navy. This strategic advancement positions Singapore well in its continued pursuit of maritime excellence and security.
