Heng Swee Keat Becomes SIT’s First Chancellor in Historic Appointment

Former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has been named the first chancellor of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with his term beginning on June 1, 2026, and lasting until May 31, 2031. Heng will assume the role of the university’s top ceremonial figure and ambassador, overseeing significant events like graduation ceremonies and representing SIT in various institutional and external activities.

SIT’s decision to establish the chancellor position marks a significant step in its evolution as a center for higher education, underlining its dedication to fostering industry-ready graduates through applied learning and research. The university expressed that Heng’s vast leadership experience and professional connections are expected to enhance its strategic priorities, such as industry collaborations and philanthropic efforts.

Upon his appointment, Heng highlighted the critical role of applied research and robust industry partnerships in contemporary education. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the university community to further SIT’s mission. Singapore’s Education Minister, Desmond Lee, also congratulated Heng and expressed confidence that his seasoned leadership would support SIT’s future development within the country’s higher education landscape.

In addition to his new role at SIT, Heng currently contributes to Singapore’s research and financial sectors as chairman of the National Research Foundation and as a director of GIC, where he is also part of its Investment Strategies Committee. His previous governmental roles include serving as Deputy Prime Minister from 2019 to 2025, Education Minister from 2011 to 2015, and Finance Minister from 2015 to 2021.
