The U.S. aviation authorities have directed operators of Boeing 737 Max jets to carry out inspections for potential cracks in a fuselage component, known as the bear strap. This directive concerns approximately 471 aircraft, with inspections slated to commence in September. The bear strap is a critical structural element, comprising sheets that provide support around the aircraft’s exit doors.
This decision follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to inspections of those aircraft. Although no issues have been detected in the 737 Max fleet to date, the regulators have raised concerns due to the aircraft’s similar design and manufacturing process, which might result in the same problem emerging.
According to the aviation regulators, if these cracks remain unnoticed, they could compromise the structural integrity of the aircraft by weakening a major component. Boeing has acknowledged the issue since its identification in 2019 and has been collaborating with airlines to address it. The company supports the mandatory inspections, emphasizing that these checks are crucial for identifying and repairing potential problems before they escalate to critical levels.
This latest round of inspections adds to the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the 737 Max, which has faced intense examination following previous safety incidents. The aircraft model was grounded worldwide after two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019, raising concerns over its manufacturing and engineering standards.
