Singapore is poised to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to drive growth across its advanced manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and connectivity sectors, which collectively contribute over 40% to the nation’s gross domestic product. These sectors are central to the government’s AI strategy, outlined in Budget 2026, aimed at fostering economic expansion beyond their immediate domains.
Trade and Industry Minister Tan See Leng emphasized that the successful integration of AI could spawn new opportunities, not just within these industries but across the broader economy. However, he cautioned that realizing these benefits hinges on how adeptly companies can redesign their operational processes to integrate AI solutions. The focus will be on transforming workflows to harness AI’s full potential.
In tandem with these efforts, Singapore will need to bolster its resources in terms of talent, capital, and expertise to sustain innovation, especially given its limited population size. This strategic enhancement is vital for maintaining the momentum of technological advancement and supporting the AI-driven transformation envisioned by the government.
Echoing similar sentiments, Cambodian Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Hem Vanndy pointed out that AI presents both opportunities and challenges for Cambodia as it progresses in its digital transformation journey. He underscored the necessity for businesses and workers to acquire the requisite skills for adopting new technologies, which is crucial for boosting productivity.
Both ministers highlighted that as nations navigate through geopolitical tensions, trade barriers, and evolving global supply chains, openness, workforce development, and technological adaptation will remain essential. These factors will play a critical role in ensuring that countries can effectively capitalize on AI advancements while overcoming the associated challenges.
