Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is calling for young individuals from various backgrounds to engage with the People’s Action Party (PAP). Speaking at the 40th anniversary of Young PAP, Wong emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives and ideas to keep the party dynamic and responsive to future challenges in Singapore. He invited citizens, including those who may not always agree with the PAP, to contribute their thoughts and get involved in the nation’s future.
Wong addressed perceptions that the PAP, as a well-established party, might not require new members. He countered this by asserting that Singapore remains a global “underdog” and continuously needs fresh leadership and innovative ideas from every generation. The Prime Minister underscored the necessity for the party to embrace new thoughts in order to renew itself and effectively tackle upcoming issues.
In his speech, Wong also cautioned against divisive politics, highlighting the PAP’s commitment to resolving issues through cooperation and consensus rather than through tactics that incite public anger or polarization. He underscored that the party prioritizes practical action and collaborative problem-solving over confrontational approaches.
The anniversary event also celebrated the launch of the Young PAP Academy, which aims to provide leadership training and mentorship opportunities for youth activists. Additionally, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering S$5,000 grants to support community initiatives spearheaded by young party members. These programs are part of the PAP’s efforts to foster a new generation of leaders and encourage active participation among Singapore’s youth.
