Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make a historic visit to Timor-Leste on July 2 and 3, marking the first official visit by a Singaporean prime minister to the Southeast Asian nation. During this landmark trip, PM Wong will engage in high-level discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. In a significant gesture, he is also anticipated to receive the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the country’s highest accolade, acknowledging Singapore’s sustained support for Timor-Leste’s developmental progress and its integration into the ASEAN community.
The visit aims to bolster bilateral ties between the two nations through the establishment of a new framework for regular consultations and the signing of a memorandum of understanding. This effort seeks to enhance collaboration in key areas such as governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. Singapore has a longstanding history of aiding Timor-Leste’s development, providing training programs, technical assistance, and peacekeeping efforts since the country’s early days of independence. This partnership has grown further following Timor-Leste’s recent inclusion as ASEAN’s newest member.
Additionally, PM Wong’s itinerary includes attending a state banquet and meeting with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. He will be accompanied by senior ministers and officials during his visit. In his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister in Singapore.
This visit is expected to further cement the diplomatic relationship between Singapore and Timor-Leste, fostering deeper ties and supporting Timor-Leste’s ongoing integration into regional institutions. The discussions and agreements made during this trip are likely to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and mutual development between the two countries.
