Tensions between Ukraine and Poland have prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to skip the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Poland. This gathering, which seeks to secure international backing and investment for Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding efforts, will instead see a delegation led by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko in attendance.
The diplomatic rift stems from Zelenskyy’s decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group revered by many Ukrainians as part of their independence fight but associated by Poles with the loss of thousands of Polish lives during World War II. This move has drawn criticism from Polish officials, including President Karol Nawrocki, who accused Ukraine of disregarding historical grievances, thereby straining relations that have been strong since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy defended the naming decision, arguing that military units should have the autonomy to choose names that reflect Ukrainian history. He cautioned that political disagreements could undermine the crucial cooperation between Ukraine and Poland, particularly amid ongoing security challenges. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk echoed the need for calm, urging both nations to ease tensions to preserve their strategic alliance.
European officials have also expressed concern, suggesting that any deterioration in Ukraine-Poland relations could inadvertently strengthen Russia’s position. They emphasized the necessity of continued collaboration between the neighboring countries to counteract potential threats.
