Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional collaboration in anticipation of holding the ASEAN chairmanship in successive years—Singapore in 2027, followed by Thailand in 2028. This decision was solidified during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first such meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first bilateral retreat in over a decade. The leaders emphasized the strength of their countries’ relations and agreed to establish a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity across their respective ASEAN chairmanships.

The two nations have pledged to broaden cooperation in several critical areas, including artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. Both leaders reiterated their support for a rules-based international order and expressed a commitment to enhancing ASEAN regional integration. Energy cooperation was a significant focus of their discussions, with particular attention to the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, which facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia.

Highlighting their dedication to social sector development, the leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding. This agreement encompasses the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and promotes cooperation among relevant institutions in both countries. The initiative underscores their commitment to fostering social progress alongside economic growth.

Economic ties between Singapore and Thailand remain robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has also maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, underscoring the strong economic interdependence between the two nations. This economic partnership is expected to continue to grow as both countries work together to address regional challenges and opportunities.
