Philippines to Address Chinese Ambassador’s Comments on Maritime Tensions

by admin477351

The Philippines plans to summon the Chinese Ambassador, Jing Quan, following his remarks that hinted at a conflict between China and the Philippines, which were interpreted as a threat. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the meeting after the ambassador’s comments were perceived as suggesting that China could easily dominate any confrontation through force.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in the Philippines criticized the ambassador’s remarks, describing them as an implied threat that could undermine diplomatic relations amid ongoing maritime disputes between the two nations. The department urged diplomats to use restraint in their public statements and avoid language that could weaken mutual trust or hinder constructive dialogue.

In response, the Chinese Embassy clarified that Ambassador Jing Quan emphasized Beijing’s preference for peaceful relations and stated that China does not intend to use force. The embassy also encouraged both countries to engage in discussions, manage disagreements diplomatically, and avoid actions that might escalate tensions.

The tensions arise amid ongoing maritime disagreements in the South China Sea, where both nations have competing claims. While both sides have stressed the importance of dialogue, the recent remarks have added strain to the complex bilateral relationship.
