Lawrence Wong Discusses Bold Decision to Join Singaporean Political Arena

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong recently revisited his pivotal decision to transition from civil service to politics in 2011, describing it as a “complete leap of faith.” His reflections were shared during a parliamentary debate centered on the nation’s political salary framework.

Wong, who was serving as the chief executive of the Energy Market Authority at the time, resigned from his role without clarity on his future political journey, including his potential electoral constituency or role if elected. His decision came with personal financial sacrifice, as he forfeited his civil service pension by leaving just shy of the 15-year service mark.

Despite the uncertainties, Wong was driven by a desire to contribute to Singapore’s development and assume a different form of public responsibility. He successfully entered Parliament in 2011 and has since held several ministerial roles before ascending to the position of prime minister. Wong emphasized that political service often involves making challenging decisions, setting strategic priorities, and being accountable for governmental outcomes.

During the debate, Wong underscored the need for future generations to embrace the responsibility of serving the nation. His comments came as the government accepted proposals from an independent review committee regarding adjustments to political salaries. Current political officeholders are set to receive one-off salary adjustments of up to 9% starting October 15, 2026, based on individual performance and circumstances.

Wong highlighted that the overarching goal of these adjustments is to ensure that capable Singaporeans continue to consider political service, with the understanding that public office should primarily be pursued out of a commitment to serve the community.
