Singapore and Luxembourg are intensifying their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, as well as space and satellite communications. This move comes as both countries aim to bolster their enduring partnership. According to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, the two nations face similar challenges due to their status as small states with limited domestic markets and natural resources. Despite these constraints, they have leveraged their openness and international networks to become significant financial and business centers catering to larger regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic links between the two countries, Wong noted that Luxembourg is the largest European Union investor in Singapore, while Singapore ranks as the second-largest investment destination for Luxembourg within the EU bloc. Both nations are also committed to enhancing relations between ASEAN and the European Union. Wong emphasized that Singapore and Luxembourg advocate for regional integration and share a commitment to maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
During an official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions touched on geopolitical developments and strategies for the two countries to foster stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. This visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg, underscoring their shared commitment to strengthening ties.
In a significant step towards deepening engagement with Singapore and the broader region, Luxembourg has opened its first resident embassy in Singapore. This initiative is seen as a clear indication of Luxembourg’s dedication to expanding its presence and partnerships in Southeast Asia. As part of his visit, Prime Minister Frieden is expected to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, addressing the topic of Europe’s role and autonomy in an evolving global landscape.
