During a recent visit to Brunei, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah emphasized their commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship between their nations. This visit was part of the celebrations for the Sultan’s 80th birthday, providing an opportunity for both leaders to discuss key areas of mutual interest and future collaborations.
Among the significant milestones highlighted were the upcoming 50th anniversary of defence cooperation in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. These events mark important junctures in the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Brunei. The discussions between Lee and Bolkiah also covered the potential for expanding cooperation in critical areas such as energy, food security, supply chain resilience, and fostering people-to-people exchanges.
Lee’s visit to Brunei included meetings with the Crown Prince and senior ministers of Brunei, focusing on initiatives to strengthen ties with future leaders and the youth of both nations. These discussions aimed at ensuring that the robust relationship continues to thrive with the next generation of leaders. Such engagements are seen as vital in maintaining and deepening the bonds that have existed between the two countries over the years.
In addition to attending official birthday events for the Sultan, Lee took the opportunity to connect with Singapore Armed Forces personnel who are currently undertaking training in Brunei. His itinerary also included a visit to a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, underscoring the multifaceted dimensions of the Singapore-Brunei relationship that extend beyond governmental ties to include economic and social connections.
