China has urged the Philippines to halt what it describes as provocative activities in the South China Sea, emphasizing that its coast guard will persist in safeguarding China’s territorial claims and maritime interests. This call for restraint comes in the wake of a Philippine supply mission to a grounded vessel at Ren’ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, an area that is hotly contested between the two nations.
According to Beijing, the Philippine vessel proceeded into the disputed area despite clear warnings from Chinese authorities. During the operation, China’s coast guard kept a close watch on the Philippine supply ship and issued a series of warnings, which China asserts were within the scope of lawful actions.
China has accused the Philippines of breaching commitments made under the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, a regional agreement aimed at fostering peace and stability in the area. Beijing warned that such actions by the Philippines could potentially destabilize the region.
Furthermore, China has announced its intention to continue law-enforcement operations around Ren’ai Jiao and other areas of the Nansha Qundao, which are known internationally as the Spratly Islands. China maintains that these operations are necessary to protect its proclaimed maritime rights.
